Everyone else is talking about it. Why not us?
By "it," I mean this newly released eight-minute tape in which Mel Gibson goes absolutely batshucks crazy, admits to punching his wife in the face and says she deserved it, apparently threatens to kill her with a baseball bat and bury her in the garden, and screams so long and loud that he has to pant like an overheated dog just to find the strength to go on screaming. (Warning: Extremely profane content.)
It's probably the single most amazing thing I've heard online. It makes Christian Bale sound like Mary Poppins.
Now we know why Mel is so good at playing psychopaths. He's just being himself.
The man is clearly insane. I'd say he's an extreme narcissist and sociopath, and maybe bipolar. His mental problems were pretty evident even from the first tape, which wasn't as bad as this one, but was bad enough.
And yet up till now he's gotten a fair amount of support from fans who are demonstrating more loyalty than judgment. Some of the defenses offered online:
"It was a private conversation."
"She's a gold-digger who set him up."
"He's just having a midlife crisis."
"Everybody gets mad during break-ups."
And my personal favorite: "He's a Christian!"
As if being a (professed) Christian is some kind of all-purpose get-out-of-jail-free card. Well, for some people, it is.
Mel probably won't go to prison. Celebrities rarely do. But I don't think we'll be seeing his psychotic grin on the big screen again.
Mad Max, indeed.
Braveheart? Not so much.
All he has to do is say he is contrite, cry for the cameras and go to rehab for a month, get a photo shoot or three with famous African-Americans, go on Oprah to cry some more, donate some boodle to an African-American charity, and many a person who is still a Gibson fan after his first infamous psychopathic bigoted meltdown will still forgive him. If people didn't have a problem with his first in vino veritas breakdown, chances are (unless they are of African ethnicity) they won't have a problem with this latest one.
South Park had his number when his movie on the Passion came out. If you haven't seen that episode that portrayed him as a deranged psychopath and nutjob, do yourself a favour, watch it online now. Talk about prophetic..

Don't celebrities get away with these things all the time?
Posted by: Sandy | July 12, 2010 at 10:58 AM
I'm hopeful this time it will be the end for him. William Morris has dumped him. Tom Cruise got dumped in a similar situation, but Tom's biggest crime was saying a few mildly-sexist words about Brooke Shields re. post-partum depression. So Tom could redeem himself. But this guy is scary, a maniac, and the woman he's screwing with isn't going to fool around. She's going to make sure everybody on earth hears this tape. No one could see him as a leading man after this...
Unless he leads with his fist.
Posted by: J. Carson Black | July 12, 2010 at 11:55 AM
I always thought Tom Cruise was dumped by William Morris because he was a bit too public and loud with his kooky Scientology beliefs, that he was thus considered too much of a loose canon by the agency and could turn off the movie going public. I think William Morris was the agency for actress Chloe Sevigny and they dumped her for you know the infamous sex scene in the Vince Gallo movie 'The Brown Bunny', at least I think it was William Morris. Sevigny's career was never the same after that movie came out.
Posted by: Larry | July 12, 2010 at 12:16 PM
oops sorry I was just on automatic there. Tom Cruise of course was dumped by Paramount Studios, not WM.

I wonder if he is contemplating a new "Passion" movie... the "passion of the Oksana Grigorieva....
"""This life is just a testing ground. It's not a popular view, I know. People will say that I'm sort of a mindless robot who's using religion as a crutch to get through life. Well, I'm not a mindless robot, but I am using (religion) as a crutch to get through life."""
""""F**king Jews...the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.""""
""""How dare you act like such a bitch when I have been so f--king nice?""""
""""a woman should be home with the f**ck**g children""""
""""Feminists don't like me, and I don't like them.""""

The panting in the tape is probably related to years of heavy smoking. Emphysema.
The tape does sound very bi-polar and/or "chronic rage syndrome" which my father had. Just blowing his top and not being able to control his anger. My dad used to sound just like that without the cursing.
I can't remember my father using the "F" word like Mel Gibson does but the screaming and yelling sounded spot on. I've often wondered if the bursts of anger were somehow cathartic, almost sexual, releasing tension, and after it was over they'd be able to fall asleep?
What a strange way to go through life? I've enjoyed so many of his movies and when he was young he was such a together, handsome man. In his old age he's just a pathetic nut-case and that is how he is going to be remembered. It's sad this is what Mel Gibson is going to be remembered for. I expect that he won't live to be real old. He may not have too much longer in his physical body.

"In his old age he's just a pathetic nut-case"
I agree he's a pathetic nutcase, but ... "in his old age"?! C'mon, Art - Mel is only a few years older than I am!
How about, "In the prime of his life"?
:-)
Posted by: Michael Prescott | July 13, 2010 at 05:10 AM
Mel is only 54? I would have guessed much older though from the way he looks.
Posted by: Sandy | July 13, 2010 at 05:46 AM
Obviously, he's sounds like he has been drinking heavily.
She is aware of the recording, he's not. Therefore, she knows to temper her comments, even to the point of sounding like she is "passively" goading him on.
However, she probably came up with the idea of the recording after putting up with no telling how much previous abuse.
In my chauvinistic worldview, no man ever even talks to a woman like that, drunk or not.
But he hit her. I believe that he has actually hit her in the past. That is the worst part. This makes him the lowest of the low. The damage is much more than a washed-up career, as no man or woman with any self respect will ever associate with him again, Christian or not.
Well, I guess he can always turn to God, but I don't want to hear about it, especially in the press.
Posted by: RabbitDawg | July 13, 2010 at 06:50 AM
Um, in the above post, by "Christian or not", I am referring to Mel himself. Other Christians may be the only ones willing to speak to him (for free).
To me it's a blasphemy to hide behind religion. Any religion.

I think it's interesting that if someone has a politically correct disability like muscular dystrophy people bend over backwards to help them, for example with telethons and special olympics etc. But if someone has a disability like an emotional disturbance people just like to condemn them and discuss how evil they are and how they deserve the worst that life can offer.
Just sayin..
Posted by: | July 13, 2010 at 08:33 PM
"But if someone has a disability like an emotional disturbance people just like to condemn them"
I appreciate your adding that perspective! I was thinking something similar but didn't say anything.
And no, like being a Christian, being insane is not "an all-purpose get-out-of-jail-free card," to use Michael's well-chosen words. But it is an important part of the picture, isn't it? Deserving of compassion, perhaps, even if we find it difficult to forgive?
I saw a poem by Hafiz yesterday that I really like:
If God
Invited you to a party
And said,
"Everyone
In the ballroom tonight
Will be my special
Guest."
How would you then treat them
When you
arrived?
Indeed, indeed!
And Hafiz knows
There is no one in this world
Who
Is not upon
His Jeweled Dance
Floor.

Sorry, but I don't buy the "mentally disturbed" defense. I don't doubt that Mel is in need of psychological help, but this recording is ego talking, folks.
It's most likely his ego that prevented him from genuinely seeking help after the DUI fiasco, just a few years ago.
I've already pointed out that there is a bit of a "set up" side to this story, but if he wasn't on the prowl to begin with, he couldn't have been trapped.
His unhinging seems to be a lifestyle choice, no?
Posted by: RabbitDawg | July 14, 2010 at 09:15 AM
Also, does anyone have any compassion for his victim(s)? Not too many comments here about that part (up until now, including me).
Of course...C'mon, say it... This one hit the Mother lode.
But how many victims are out there that haven't?

A new Mel tape appeared today, as part of an ongoing, carefully orchestrated series of releases:
tiny.cc/6gsbt
(Vulgar and profane content, of course.)
In this one he threatens to burn the house down, screams a whole lot, and at one point lets out a primal yawp of bottomless rage and frustration. He also seems obsessed with being sexually serviced in a particular way.
I think one reason I have less sympathy for Mel than I do for, say, muscular dystrophy patients is that muscular dystrophy patients don't treat other people this way.
And there are medications available that can help with mental illness. It appears that Mel has simply refused to take them. If there were a readily available treatment for muscular dystrophy, but sufferers declined to use it, I wouldn't be too sympathetic to them.
Of course, resistance to undergoing treatment is itself a symptom of Mel's paranoia, narcissism, psychosis, etc. So it's hard to say how much responsibility he should be assigned, and how much of it is just the disease talking.
But surely a person who treats his significant other this abusively must accept at least *some* responsibility.
Posted by: Michael Prescott | July 14, 2010 at 11:23 AM
"She is aware of the recording, he's not. Therefore, she knows to temper her comments, even to the point of sounding like she is "passively" goading him on."
He definitely needs help and is seriously out of control, but, this woman is not exactly innocent here. She is using passive/aggressive tactics to pull his strings(and man does he have some strings to pull). Obviously she wanted to get some juicy comments from Mel to make these tapes.
If he hit her, then shame on him, there is no excuse for him. It did seem suspicious though, that she adjusted her statements in mid sentence to give a more fuller description of her injuries. It does appear that she is doing this specifically for the recording.
Mel left a wife of 35 years to play the field. He is probably getting what he derserves here. If he acted like this throughout his marriage, I wonder how it lasted so long.

"But surely a person who treats his significant other this abusively must accept at least *some* responsibility. "
I agree!
"Of course, resistance to undergoing treatment is itself a symptom of Mel's paranoia, narcissism, psychosis, etc. "
Good point. That's what makes this so complicated. It's a difficult dance, trying to protect ourselves and others from violent behavior, without simply throwing deeply troubled people onto the trash heap.

I think I read somewhere on the internet that people who have near death experiences see that we are all interconnected and they experience a oneness with all beings and understand that love is a fundamental property of the universe. I can't remember where I read that though ... oh, wait ...
I guess it's one thing to read about spiritual experiences and another to have them and integrate them into your personality.

Whenever I see these stories about celebrities acting badly I tend to just tune them out. You never know what was orchestrated for a better story. I would hope the legal system can deal with abusive spouses no matter how famous (or infamous) they are.

Seeing some kind of equivalence between delusional psychotic verbal violence and bigotry and people suffering from some kind of physical handicap is actually incredibly insulting to people suffering from some kind of physical handicap. There is no comparison, it doesn't even make any sense whatsoever.
Using this kind of twisted logic, one can justify all kinds of hatred and calls to violence as merely something to pity in its practicioners, as just a handicap, an emotional disturbance, and we should reserve judgment. Sure it's a handicap, doesn't mean it shouldn't be called out on and called what it is - delusional, psychotic, destructive, violent and barbaric. Unless you want to pretend that there is no such thing as violence, bigotry and barbarity or we must not be judgmental on this front - call a spade a spade - merely because we are all one humanity and interconnected on some deeper level, yes so?
I betcha that people justifying and excusing mad Mel's behaviour as an "emotional disturbance" have been far more harshly critical and condemnatory of others who have said things much less violent and hateful.

"I betcha that people justifying and excusing mad Mel's behaviour as an "emotional disturbance"
Are you referring to any of the comments or commenters here on this site? I trust you're not talking about me, because I'm neither justifying nor excusing.
I do speak of compassion—for the perpetrator as well as the victim— but that's a different thing entirely.
I don't know about you, but I don't find it so easy to put myself in a separate category from Mel Gibson and simply leave it at that. I've never punched anyone, but I have hurt people terribly through words I've said and judgments I've made.
Often, it's not that I want to make those judgments, you understand. They're just there, running through my mind, before I can do a thing about them.
Honestly, I don't think that makes me different from most people.
No—I don't excuse his behavior. Not in the least. And I do want to be protected from people who might physically harm me or others. I wouldn't have a problem with him doing jailtime, if it comes to that.
In that sense, his behavior merits quite a different response from mine.
But how can I not feel compassion?

A classic showdown here between Mother and Father wisdom. Mother says love 'em the way they are, unconditionally. People pretty much do their best, and life is hard. Evil boils down to ignorance.
Dad says Bullshit- it's not that bad and people can do a lot better. No excuses.
So, issues of free will are always tough. I try to keep the Mother and Father together- one without the other is a dysfunctional family!
Posted by: Tharpa | July 15, 2010 at 07:56 AM
Tharpa, I like your analogy about Mom and Dad wisdom.
Meanwhile, yet another Gibson tape has been released:
tiny.cc/pul87
(Naturally, content warning for extreme profanity, etc.)
For those scoring at home, this makes five tapes so far. More to come? Undoubtedly.
The Daily Beast has an interesting story about a few (a very few) conservative bloggers who are trying to defend Gibson. One is John Derbyshire, whom I've long regarded as a total ass. His comments on Gibson do nothing to change my opinion.
Derbyshire is quoted as saying: “Clearly Mel's a guy who's deeply unhappy some of the time and finds relationships with women difficult. Still I'd maintain that ‘a guy who's deeply unhappy some of the time and finds relationships with women difficult’ describes a largish portion of male humanity—one in three at the very minimum. What's the fuss?”
tiny.cc/afg0m
So "one in three" men "at the very minimum" beats up his girlfriend, threatens to murder her, and screams at her in psychotic rage? I certainly hope this is not true.
Derbyshire's nonchalant attitude about spousal abuse ("What's the fuss?") is the main reason I find this story worth covering. Judging by comments I've read on other websites (*not* this one), too many people seem willing to shrug off Gibson's behavior by saying, "Boys will be boys." This attitude only perpetuates a cycle of abuse. It also shows an extreme disregard for the rights and well-being of women.
Frankly, it just toasts my cheese.

"A classic showdown here between Mother and Father wisdom. Mother says love 'em the way they are, unconditionally"
Interesting point, Tharpa. I've heard it expressed that way before. But in some families, it seems to be just the opposite, doesn't it?

There it is a problem in human society that there is too much negativity; hatred, anger, etc.
There is even an entire industry that makes it's money selling hatred. We call it the mass media.
You can be a damper of negativity and work to reduce the problem or you can be a repeater and amplifier of negativity and be part of the problem.
The greatest spiritual teachers have taught, in their various ways, that it is better to be a damper of negativity than an amplifier and repeater.
Are you a part of the solution or part of the problem?

Hi Sanctimonius,

With the aide of google translator and a relentless curiousity I found this on a Russian website and can confirm there are several others with similar information and all names mentioned have been consistent.
I will say this may explain the battered and bruised ego of Mel Gibson and his tirade but definitely don't condone his actions/behaviour. It takes two too tango and a classic case of reaping what one sows maybe appropriate here.
Just to make the biography clearer Oksana left Russia to go to London at 21 years of age.

" In response to Gibson's allegations that she left him when he stopped to spend her money Grigorieva answers : "Because I am saving my life and my daughter ! " You almost killed us , you forgot ? "

The first two tapes submitted as evidence in court , has significantly shaken the position of Gibson in the society and put an end to his reputation . But not because of family problems - all far worse . At one of the films Actor calls blacks " niggers " .
And on the third record , in addition to the usual torrent of abuse against Oksana , Mel's conversation responds extremely pejorative and Latin Americans. Actor calls them " mokrozh ... pymi Latino " that the U.S. is considered extremely offensive . Not only has Mel's first wife filed a sworn affidavit in court that he had never struck her in over 25 years of marriage, but...

I've read some horror stories on the internet about men who married Russian mail order brides. Russian women who married elderly American men and then took them to the cleaners and women who married men who turned out to be abusive alcoholics. I'm thinking these girls aren't as naive as what they might appear. They know how to skin the rabbit.

William,
You are not a sanctimonious hypocrite. You are very likeable.

I'n not buying the "doctored tapes" defense. You can clearly hear the two voices overlapping. Besides, there's no possible context in which Gibson's behavior would be appropriate.

That may well be true. Oksana is surely no innocent. But nobody deserves that kind of abuse.

Mel,
Amusing! But no, it won’t do.
William tends to avoid semicolons. He wouldn’t use the phrase “repeater and amplifier” and he wouldn’t use the commas to make the subordinate clause “in their various ways”.
William’s taking a well-earned break. But if you miss him that much, here’s something he prepared earlier (from the Christian Bale thread):
“Oh the price of arrogance. Nations have self destructed over arrogance.
What we sow we reap. That is the law of progress without this law I suspect there would be little if any progress in soul evolution. Just because someone has compassion for this man does not mean he can escape this law. Compassion is about understanding not forgiveness. Compassion is love in action and is a very rare phenomenon in this world. Most confuse sympathy and empathy with compassion.
“God may have compassion but, Hell is not sitting there for no reason.”
Oh how the ego loves to condemn others to hell. When we condemn others we condemn ourselves. Why would an ego condemn anyone to hell?
I suspect it is self hate projected outward, as it is too painful to deal with by looking into a mirror.”

Yep, if the recording was doctored, the words had to originate somewhere, in some context. And I seriously doubt that it was invented from whole cloth.
However, if 'adjustments' were made and proven, I imagine that it would make them inadmissible in court, at minimum.
This, too, is no "get out of jail free" card for either one of them.
As the tapes progress, Mel sounds more and more like a psychotic wounded animal, and Oksana progressively sounds like an sweet, innocent little girl. It's obviously real, yet staged at the same time.
What kind of parenting are we looking at here? An unbalanced bore versus a gold-digging opportunist? Or a couple of incompatible folks having a really bad phase of life?
Maybe somewhere in between...
Posted by: RabbitDawg | July 16, 2010 at 03:47 PM
Also, if the recordings are proven to be doctored, wouldn't Mel have a basis for a lawsuit somewhere here? Maybe several lawsuits.
Oh no! If so, this may end up becoming one of those distracting Hollywood cases that never seems to go away. Obama and the Congress Critter's are gonna love it.

Ben,
Could you explain the meaning of that 'quote' to me. I'm just a dumb movie star.
Posted by: Mel | July 17, 2010 at 07:13 AM
I think at the point he is alleged to have hit her — and I don't know that he did, but if he did, then at that time — I don't think she was his "significant other" anymore. From the tapes he sounds like he hates her, and that his hatred has been brewing for a while. More than anything else he probably hates himself for the choices he made which he is blaming her for.
I like Mel. I still like him. I think he's as funny and crazy a man as many of the characters he plays, and I pray this doesn't totally destroy him.
In some ways what happened could be looked at as a blessing. He has taken a mighty fall, but I think it's highly unlikely he's going to have an OJ moment. I think the rage that we hear is the pressure blowing off that will save him from that.
And without this kind of public collapse it's also unlikely he would have been forced to deal with his problems. So I think the collapse gives him a real chance to recover as well. I hope that he takes it. I hope that he learns to see that all the deals the devil puts in front of you when you exist in the faux reality of Hollywood are precisely that — the mass delusions of an insane local populace that believes it is the center of all the things that are important.

It's hard to understand people sometimes...
Today I went grocery shopping with my husband. Things were busy and parking spots were rare, so he parked in a spot that wasn't very big. The mini van in the spot next to ours was well over the line, but our car is small, so we made do.
When we came out from the store this woman was putting her groceries into the mini van. I could see a toddler strapped into a child seat in the back. The woman started yelling at my husband that, according to her son, when my husband got out of our car he hit her car with the door and left a mark.
I couldn't see a mark on her car, but honestly that wasn't the first thing that concerned me. The first thing out of my mouth was, "You're worried about your car, but you left a child unattended in a vehicle in this heat?"
The woman started swearing at me and hurried to drive out of the parking lot like a crazed idiot. I have to say I'm still worried about that kid riding in the back seat.
At least Mel's wife is an adult and has some control over which crazy people she hangs out with. That poor kid in the car will have to put up with his situation for who knows how long.

I don't know if the tapes have been 'doctored,' but there is something suspicious about them. At the very least the woman knows how to push the guy's buttons to make him say the worst possible things. Of course there's no excuse for the things Gibson says.

Oksana had a script written and provoked Mel. If somebody has doubts: go through all her interviews. Does not matter what she is saying - she always lying - it's her nature.
She always sounds and looks false.
And she will go till the end to get millions.
She tricked many men - let us hope she will trick the court.

Sorry, I meant. let us hope she will not trick the court.

--------------------------------------------
That's what I meant when I said "she knows how to skin the rabbit." Targeting rich older men with obvious mental problems. Their youth fading away from them they have something to prove so they latch onto these exotic somewhat attractive women who then proceed to start pushing the right buttons to get what they want. It's almost like a co-dependent relationship; only I am suspicious if always in the back of her mind there was the underlying thought that if things went south she was still going to come out on top. It's almost like these women talk amongst themselves and trade secrets on how to "skin the rabbit."

"She tricked many men"
It just occurred to me: Some of us are saying it's his fault. Some are saying, no she's the guilty party here.
Hey folks, it takes two to tango. These two have been together for a while, right? (I don't know the specifics.) Don't you think at a certain point, she knew what she was getting herself into? And don't you think the same goes for him?
This is NOT to let Gibson off the hook. If he physically injured her, maybe he should do jail time.
I just don't buy the argument that in a long-term consensual relationship, one person is the villain and the other the victim. It's never as simple as that.
Both are responsible for what happens. Each has certain needs, and each makes compromises (particularly in a seriously flawed relationship like this) in order to meet those needs.
Make sense?
Posted by: Bruce Siegel | July 17, 2010 at 07:35 PM
"each makes compromises"
Change that last sentence to: each puts up with certain compromises.

"Hey folks, it takes two to tango. These two have been together for a while, right? (I don't know the specifics.) Don't you think at a certain point, she knew what she was getting herself into? And don't you think the same goes for him?"
That's true. In abusive relationships, there is an abuser and there is an enabler. The enabler makes excuses for the abuser, keeps forgiving him, and pretends that "he really loves me and this time he's sorry."
There are some people who seek out this kind of unhealthy relationship. Look at the women who dated OJ Simpson after his acquittal, or who write love letters to serial killers.
Then there's the gold-digger angle. Oksana previously married Pierce Brosnan, had a child with him, and divorced him, presumably netting a large settlement.
I doubt she's an angel. She's either seriously self-sabotaging or seriously manipulative, or both.
But what interests me is Gibson's meltdown. Here's a guy who, at one time, was viewed as one of Hollywood's good guys, a family man with solid moral values, unspoiled by fame. That image took a series of hits in recent years and now has totally blown up, and we're left with the reality of a drunken, bipolar lunatic making anti-Semitic and racist comments while he threatens his girlfriend and screams at her to sexually service him.
Lo, how the mighty have fallen!
Posted by: Michael Prescott | July 18, 2010 at 11:09 AM
Oops. I wrote, "Oksana previously married Pierce Brosnan ..."
I was confusing one Bond with another. She married Timothy Dalton, not Pierce Brosnan.
Also, in the main post I refer to Oksana as Gibson's wife, but actually she was his live-in girlfriend (and mother of his child).
